Misinformation Reported on Matthew Owens Beating Spark Outrage, new arrest (video)

Matthew Owens was allegedly beaten by a vicious mob,and some news outlet reported misinformation linking this incident to Trayvon."

Many online news organization recently reported misinformation regarding the brutal beating of Mr. Matthew Owens from Mobil Alabama. We at addMorejuice went searching for the facts and discover this is not a “hate crime” as previously reported.

The misinformation reported indicate the bating was a hate crime and NOT a long standing ungoing dispute between two neighbours who often times uses racial slurs. An argument between the victim and some kids at a local basketball court, witnesses said, got overheated, as you will see, leading to the beating of Owens.

It was also reported that, during this argument someone mentioned Trayvon Martin’s death. Matthew Owens was allegedly attacked by a group of 20 African-American adults. At the end of the beating someone reportedly uttered “Now that’s justice for Trayvon.” However the Mayor of Mobile clarified that this crime had nothing to do with the Trayvon Martin case. Huffington Post reports:

The mayor of Mobile, Ala. said Tuesday that the brutal beating of Matthew Owens was not a hate crime, as new details emerge implicating the victim, Matthew Owens, as the chief instigator.

About 20 African American adults beat Owens into critical condition on Saturday night after an argument between the victim and some kids at a local basketball court, witnesses said.

One person claimed that Owens spewed racial slurs at the group and even pulled out two knives, according to WPMI..

On Thursday Mobile police have made an arrest in the beating of Matthew Owens. Authorities said the suspect is 44-year-old Terry Rawls.

Chris Levy with Mobile police said this wasn’t the first run-in between the two.

“This is an incident from an ongoing dispute between neighbors, is what this is. We have a neighborhood. We have Mr. Owens and Mr. Rawls, who have a history of disputes which goes back to 2009,” said Cpl. Levy.

Levy said racial slurs have been exchanged in the past and in the most recent incident. As far as a claim that this had anything to do with the Trayvon Martin incident in Florida, Levy said it’s not true.

Thanks for reporting the facts addMoreJuice. This was getting out of control over at yahoo with heated racist comments. Now this new information changes everything for me.

  • Panic City

I knew something was fishy about this story and I wanted to read all the facts before jumping in. So Owens was the culprit who started this mess and get the worst of it.

I had a differen take reading this. I read the first reporting over at yahoo and blaze and they basically say this was a hate crime. I am feel sorry for Mr. Owens but he his the instigator. He should have given the kids back their ball instead of using racial epitats towards them, this makes no sense.

dude, 20 black citizens assault 1 man for talking sh!t? well ill be, i didnt know he was running his mouth. so from now on we shall always solve verbal disagreements 20 to 1. and i am so glad race wont come into play.

you dont know a hate crime till you walk your white ass through a neighborhood you dont belong in. that previous sentence was racist and stereotypical…..but seriously, go walk your white @ss through magnolia at night and tell me how progressive the black community is. show your faith in their lack of predjudice. saying a black neighborhood is high crime is also a racist statement.

i challenge any elected white official to do this. i’d love to see the results.

Mr. Rawls’ attorney reported on AL.com Friday that Mr. Rawls denies the allegation that there has been an ongoing dispute with Matthew Owens. With that being said, does this indicate the beating could have been a racist act? If anyone can say this was not a racist act then surely Trayvon Martin’s murder was not racist.

Did you watch the video above with the arrest of Mr. Rawls? Because the police confirm that there was a dispute between Mr. Owens and Rawls dating back to 2009 which the police themselves documented as the lead officer indicated above in the second video posted above.

I watched the above video, I was simply stating what is being reported by AL.com regarding the ongoing dispute. Personally I would think by his denying the ongoing dispute allegation that he is adding fuel to the flame of racism on his part. The police department gave him a perfect out and he pretty much destroyed it.

Can’t count how many times blacks have used racial slurs against me and my entire family but did we gather a group of 20 or more armed with pipes, baseball bats, paint cans, bricks etc. to beat someone to a bloody pulp over it? NO! And saying that this was not a hate crime because it was an on-going dispute between 2 neighbors is insane! Gathering 20+ people to beat someone within an inch of their life IS a HATE CRIME and premeditated. All the participants in this attack need to be charged with attempted murder.
